Shamrock Rovers set a new League of Ireland unbeaten record

Shamrock Rovers set a new League of Ireland unbeaten record on Monday afternoon following a 3-0 win over Waterford at Tallaght Stadium.

The Hoops have now gone 31 matches without a loss in the league - a run stretching back to 2019 - breaking the record the club had previously set in the late 1920s.

The result also put them top of the SSE Airtricity League table - for a couple of hours at least - as they moved above the only other unbeaten side, St Patrick's Athletic.

The goals were scored by Rory Gaffney, Gary O'Neill and Danny Mandroiu as the Hoops heaped further misery on Waterford.

The men from the south east have endured a difficult start to life under Republic of Ireland legend Kevin Sheedy, and have just six points from their opening eight matches.

They lie in ninth position - one point above Longford Town, who play Dundalk this evening.

Shamrock Rovers boss Stephen Bradley will have concerns, however, surrounding the fitness of Neil Farrugia who left the field having appeared to have picked up a hamstring injury.

Elsewhere, Bohemians were denied an important three points by Drogheda United.

James Clarke's 93rd minute header earned the hosts a point at Head In The Game Park, after Liam Burt's goal gave Bohs the advantage.

Drogheda are in fifth, with Bohemians two places further back in seventh.

With one more round of games to play before the first series of fixtures is complete, the title race is beginning to form.

St Patrick's Athletic, who have made an encouraging start to this campaign, face third-placed Sligo Rovers this evening.

Shamrock Rovers and St Pats meet in Inchicore next Friday.
