Saturday rugby round-up - Munster's knockout stage hopes take a hit

Ulster have kept their slim hopes of progression alive with a 24-9 victory over Scarlets.

Darren Cave and Ruan Pienaar scored tries in quick succession in the first half, with both converted by Ian Humphreys.

In the second half, Tommy Bowe and Rory Best picked up tries, leaving Ulster 15 points ahead of their opponents when the final whistle blew.

Toulon remain on top of Ulster's Pool 3, with a game in hand as they prepare to face off against Leicester tomorrow evening.

Earlier, Munster's hopes of making the knockout stages of the Champions Cup took a major dent.

Anthony Foley's side went down 16-9 to Clermont in their Pool 1 clash at Thomond Park.

Clermont secured all their points in the first half - thanks to tries from Fritz Lee to Wesley Fofana. Camille Lopez managed a penalty and a drop goal, while it was Ian Keatley with two penalties with Munster in the first half.

Munster went in to the second half trailing at 6 points to Clermont's 16. However, while Clermont failed to add any more points to their score, Keatley's successful penalty was not enough to give Munster the boost they needed.

Munster are now second in the pool, on the same number of points as Saracens, with Clermont out in front on 10.

The sides meet again in France next week, and Clermont number 8 Frtiz Lee is confident they can repeat this evening's performance:

Meanwhile, Connacht are just a point behind pool 2 leaders Exeter in the Challenge Cup.

Pat Lam's side ran in five tries in a comfortable 42-19 defeat of Bayonne at the Sportsgrounds.
