The IRFU have been accepted onto a World Rugby trial that allows players to take to the field with goggles.
The news means that players such as former Leinster back Ian McKinley will be allowed play in Ireland. McKinley lost the sight in his left eye and retired in 2011 before returning to play in Italy where wearing the eye protection is allowed.
World Rugby have today confirmed that the IRFU have been accepted on to the trial that will allow players wear goggles that are made by Italian brand Raleri. McKinley uses those allowed goggles in Italy meaning he can now play in Ireland.
The trial has strict conditions from World Rugby with permission needed from medical experts to use the goggles.
An official statement from the IRFU said "It should be noted that only those Rugby Goggles carrying the official World Rugby Trial Approved logo will be permitted to be used in the trial, and all participants must demonstrate their need for the Rugby Goggles through a letter from their ophthalmologist (or similar expert) stating that there is an ophthalmic or medical need for their use. Inspections and checks may be performed by match referees to ensure that all participants have complied with these conditions".
McKinley has played for the Barbarians and Zebre in 2015 and currently plays with Viadana in Italy. The move means that should he wish, the former Leinster star can play again in Ireland.
