Bernard Jackman explains how Andy Farrell has benefited Ireland

One of the take-aways from Ireland's historic victory over New Zealand was the excellence in defence exhibited by Joe Schmidt's side in Chicago.

Since April 2016, former England international and defence coach Andy Farrell has been part of the Irish backroom team and for Bernard Jackman, his expertise is bearing fruit.

He explained the hallmarks of Farrell's methods, especially with another match against the All Blacks to come on November 19th.

"What I see is an unbelievable work-rate and attention to detail. They fill the front line and they demand the 15 in line to work incredibly hard in the back field and Rob and Conor covered the space brilliantly," said Jackman on Off The Ball.

"In fairness, it was a massive challenege against the All Blacks. You look at Beauden Barrett and the variety of his kicking game and if you only have two predominantly in the back field it is going to be tested.

"For Ireland, it wasn't a weakness and they were able to actually stop the All-Blacks getting the momentum. The big challenge is going to be if [Brodie] Retallick comes back into the team to play against us.

"I think Ireland controlled the middle of the field and that's something that the All-Blacks tend to dominate the majority of the time."

Jackman also believes Jerome Kaino could bring another dimension to the All-Blacks attack next time out which will be a challenge for Farrell and Ireland to counteract.

"But I think Farrell is a massive influence in terms of just our defence, system, accountability with players and just having another winner in the back-room staff; a guy who's massively respected, has played in the biggest occasions and has no fear of anybody. The more of those you get in and around your environment, the more likely you are going to be successful."
