"We were our own worst enemy" | Friend on Connacht's Champions Cup exit

Connacht were their own worst enemies during their 21-7 defeat to Toulouse at the Sportsground, according to head coach Andy Friend.

Connacht, who are now out of the Heineken Champions Cup, had started the game on the front foot but failed to maintain their early lead.

"I thought our energy was really good but we just weren't clinical enough. We got ourselves in that score-zone five or six times and came away with nothing.

"In Champions Cup rugby against top sides, French champions last year, you can't do that. You gotta convert when you put yourself in good positions and we didn't do it.

"I thought we threw everything in our defense. I thought our set-piece on a whole functioned very, very well."

While the Australian was happy with those aspects of his side's game, it was in attack, he said, that the province let themselves down.

"When we had the football we just turned it over too easily and that then released pressure. So we were building pressure, then it's an easy turnover and the pace of the game slows down again and then Toulouse were good enough to control it and get the win.

"It was really frustrating. We were our own worst enemy out there today."

In terms of injuries ahead of next weekend's match against Montpellier, Friend revealed that only Ultan Dillane was a concern presently.

"He got a knock so we'll see how he is. It's always after 24 hours that you get the best assessment but on the whole it looks like we've come through pretty clean."
