Four Kenyan runners banned in a single day for anti-doping violations

Four Kenyan athletes have been banned in one day for anti-doping violations.

Among them are 2017 World 1500m gold medallist, Elijah Manangoi.

The Athletics Integrity United has also handed down bans to long-distance runner Patrick Siele, 2018 Rotterdam Marathon-winner Kenneth Kipkemoi, and 2013 Venice Marathon winner Mercy Kibarus.

The quartet are just the latest in a long list of Kenyan athletes found guilty of anti-doping violations.

Last month, Wilson Kipsang was banned for four years for whereabouts violations and tampering with an anti-doping control.

In 2019 alone, fifteen Kenyan athletes were banned for anti-doping violations.

Manangoi has been provisionally suspended by the AIU for whereabouts failures.

Kipkemoi has received a two-year ban from World Athletics Disciplinary Tribunal for the presence of a banned substance.

A September 2019 sample showed traces of the substance, Terbutaline.

In his testimony, Kipkemoi claimed the Terbutaline's presence was down to medicine prescribed to him by a doctor in Kenya after he'd been diagnosed with pneumonia and malaria.

The AIU concluded that "since the athlete was aware that the medication contained a prohibited substance and conducted little or no due diligence, the athlete cannot benefit from a finding of No Significant Fault or Negligence."

Kimkemoi's two-year ban began on 25 February 2020, and he will miss next year's Olympic Games as a result.

Siele has been provisionally suspended by the AIU for "evading, refusing or failing to submit to sample collection."

But the heftiest ban of the four belongs to Kibarus.

She has been banned from competing for eight years, with effect from 5 December 2019.

A sample taken from the 36-year old at last year's Sanlam Cape Town Marathon showed traces of 19-Norandrosterone, a metabolite of Nandrolone.

A four-year ban was proposed, with an additional four years added due to this being Kibarus' second anti-doping violation in ten years.
