WATCH | Romain Grosjean miraculously walks away from exploding F1 car

Romain Grosjean somehow walked away from a huge explosion after crashing his car at the Bahrain Grand Prix.

The Swiss driver appeared to lose control of his car of the first lap of the track, with the car bursting into flames and splitting in half.

The Haas team tweeted that Grosjean suffered only minor injuries, in a crash that many feared would prove fatal.

A Haas driver, team boss Gunther Steiner praised the work of the rescue services in ensuring the safety of Grosjean.

"He seems to be OK," said Steiner. "I want to thank the rescue crews, they were there very quick. The marshals and the FIA people did a great job.

Alan van der Merwe, the driver of the medical car was one of the first on the scene.

"It was a big surprise. I have never seen that much fire in 12 years," said van der Mewe.

"Romain got out of the car himself, which is pretty amazing after an accident like that.

"All the systems we have worked to develop, everything worked hand-in-hand: the halo, the barriers, the seat-belt.

"Everything worked. Without just one of those things working, it could have been a very different outcome."

The footage of him emerging from the flames is, frankly, mind-boggling.
