"I can see him going 12 rounds" - Andy Lee casts an expert eye over Conor McGregor vs Floyd Mayweather

For Andy Lee, Conor McGregor's best asset heading into the fight against Floyd Mayweather is his sheer self-belief.

But of course, it will take more than that to defeat a boxer with a 49-0 record who has faced the best in his weight classes.

On tonight's Off The Ball, Lee and Paschal Collins, who has trained McGregor in his gym, joined us to focus on the technique that will decide which way the bout goes.

"Mayweather's seen it all, I just can't build a case for him," said Lee of McGregor in terms of the eventual victor in Vegas.

"It'll be interesting to see how far that mental strength and that belief has in himself takes him when he's being outclassed which I believe he will be."

While there is a possibility Mayweather could knock out McGregor, Lee sees a potentially more likely outcome if certain factors go the Dubliner's way.

"I can see him going 12 rounds and that's a victory in itself for Conor McGregor's who's never fought to go in there with Mayweather and go 12 rounds. That's a victory in itself," he said.

Some footage has emerged from sparring and other settings when hitting the pads which Joe put to Lee in regards to technique.

"He looks like a raw novice, like a good kid in a gym who'd be training. He stands very tall, his chin seems to be very high, his head seems to stay at one level all the time," Lee explained.

"In terms of what Steve Jr said in terms of his defence, he seems very open, he uses a lot of movement. And just in terms of his technique, it doesn't look like he punches correctly, it doesn't look like he punches through the target. From what I've just seen of the pads and that... he did look good landing that left hook on Malignaggi now, that did look good to me. That was one second of a clip that they released. It was hard to see what was there. Landing a punch on Malignaggi is like night and day to landing a punch on Mayweather. There's levels to everything and you're talking about going in at the highest level."

One of the subplots leading into the fight is about the gloves which will be 8oz, although Lee does not feel that will have a major bearing on the future of either fighter.

"If anything, it does suit McGregor a little bit more to have the smaller gloves. But it's 2oz, so if you had to 2oz in you, would you even feel it? It's nothing in the difference in the gloves. They're a little bit tighter in the fist and a little bit smaller in your hand which means for Mayweather, if he's blocking or McGregor's blocking, there's less protection and they'd probably be a bit harder to land on your face," he said.
