Irish athletes in Tokyo | The full day 5 Olympics schedule

As we look ahead to day five and a packed schedule for Team Ireland athletes in Tokyo, day four threw up some great stories with Mona McSharry and Aidan Walsh.

Swimmer McSharry finished eighth in the 100m breaststroke final, and was delighted with her performance.

"This is my first event ever in the Olympics and I’ve made a final, with the past year and a half that everyone’s had, it is unbelievable.

“Thank you to everyone who got up to watch it, and for supporting me.

"Making a final was my target for 2024, so we’re going to have to sit down and make some new targets! It’s amazing.”

Belfast's Walsh is one win away from securing a medal in the men's welterweight boxing at the Toky0 Olympics.

He is through to Friday's quarter-finals after collecting a unanimous points victory against Cameroon's Albert Mengue on Tuesday.

“It’s brilliant,” the former Commonwealth medallist said on RTE after his bout. “It’s amazing to get the journey underway.

“I just take each fight as it comes from now. It doesn’t matter if it’s an Olympic final [in Tokyo], an All-Ireland final or an Antrim title, every fight is as important to me as them all.

"It’s about listening to the coaches and the right tactics, getting in there an implementing them. The coaches got it right. I just do as they tell me and that’s it.”
