"It's not just all solved" - What next after Delaney departure?

Football administration in Ireland needs to have a root-and-branch review regardless of John Delaney's departure from the FAI - according to journalist Daniel McDonnell.

McDonnell was speaking to The Football Show about the situation regarding Delaney, the FAI's financial situation and the legacy that Delaney leaves behind him after fourteen years at the helm of the organisation.

But any joy about his departure may well be short-lived, according to Daniel.

"It's not just all solved because John Delaney exits stage left.

"In football administration in the country, full stop, there are a lot of people who have been around for a long time in particular roles.

"There has been an element of ownership over positions. The game doesn't belong to anyone.

"You hope with the game going forward with reforms of term limits, that there is a constant refreshing of people. You cannot just imagine with football that briefs belong to certain people.

"You hope that that is going to happen but there are still a lot of people there, not a million miles away from the seats of power that are products of the old regime.

"That is something that we have to bear in mind, that that does not just stop here because one change has happened - as much as that was a badly-needed change.

Dan also relayed that several sources had said that the reason for the timing of the announcement on Saturday evening was due to talks between the FAI and Delaney stretching on late into Saturday.
