Manchester United hope to name new manager 'by end of the April'

Manchester United are hopeful to be in the position to name their new manager by the end of April, according to reports.

Club director John Murtough announced at the start of March that a “thorough process” is under way to find their next permanent manager as the club looks to start challenging for “top trophies” again.

Ralf Rangnick has been at the helm as interim boss since the club sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in December, but he was never considered to be a permanent solution.

Mauricio Pochettino and Ajax boss Erik ten Hag have been the two names linked with the club to date, while Thomas Tuchel has been rumoured since Roman Abramovich was sanctioned by the UK government.

Now, according to reports in The Daily Mail, Manchester United are getting closer to making a permanent appointment and hope to have their person in place by the end of next month.

Pochettino has been on the club's radar since he left his role at Tottenham Hotspur and with PSG's embarrassing exit from the Champions League this week, it's expected that he will depart the club at the end of the season at the latest.

Ten Hag - who is out of contract at the end of next season - is also understood to be interested in the role, and has been reportedly 'sounded out' by intermediaries about the job.

Rangnick is scheduled to hand over the reins to a new manager in the summer before taking on a consultancy role at Old Trafford, and it is understood that the club want to appoint a manager before the end of the season.

The plan United have mapped out will allow their next manager greater scope to be involved in their preparations for the forthcoming window, with the uncertainty over who will be in charge currently impacting transfer, contract talks and squad planning, and also the 2022/23 season.
