Reports: Liverpool in talks to sign Wolves' Diogo Jota

After securing the signing of Thiago Alcantara, Liverpool are reportedly "escalating their interest" in Diogo Jota from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

According to The Independent, Liverpool are "optimistic" of following up the signing of Thiago by adding the forward to their squad for a fee expected to be in excess of £35 million.

The 23-year-old was left out of the Wolves squad for the Carabao Cup defeat by Stoke City on Thursday night, having been an unused substitute in the win over Sheffield United in the Premier League on Monday.

Nuno Espírito Santo, the Wolves head coach, was tightlipped about Jota’s absence, saying that “he wasn’t available, these are decisions we have to make. We have to prepare the squad.”

Any potential agreement for Jota could also be made easier with Liverpool defender Ki-Jana Hoever set to join Wolves in a deal worth £10m, plus add-ons.

Jota has scored 16 goals in 67 appearances in the top-flight since helping Wolves gain promotion in 2017-18 on loan from Atletico Madrid.

Jurgen Klopp has also reportedly long been an admirer of the versatility and work rate of the Portuguese international.

The signing, if completed would give Klopp some needed cover for Roberto Firmino, Mo Salah and Sadio Mane as Liverpool look to defend their Premier League title while also challenging on other fronts.
