Starting Trent Alexander-Arnold isn't worth the risk for Liverpool | John Giles

Former Republic of Ireland player John Giles joined Off The Ball on Thursday to discuss Liverpool and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool didn't spend much money in the summer. Ibrahima Konate was their only signing.

John Giles believes that inactivity and the memory of last season have made everyone overlook Liverpool. Giles believes they are the favourites to win the Premier League.

“I think they're favourites to win the league," he said.

"I know what you're saying at the start of the season is it Man U, is it Chelsea, I think they're all going to be contenders. I didn't see Liverpool mentioned.

"Now, Liverpool's season last season was very, very bad. But that was a very unusual season with the amount of injuries they had, particularly with Van Dijk and players like that.

"Okay, they got into the Champions League at the end but this is a fresh season and now they have those players back.

"What I've seen from them so far, particularly last night, I thought they were brilliant. And for example I thought City were poor. They won 6-3 but I didn't think it was a good performance at all.

"I thought the Liverpool performance was brilliant. To go 2-1 down and come back in the manner in which they did. That's the Liverpool team of old.

"They've got all their players back and I think people are looking back too much at last season for where they finished and the matches they lost. I don't think that's going to happen to them this year at all.”

But while he has high expectations for Liverpool, he's still concerned about Trent Alexander-Arnold's defending.

“If you do have a chance to look at the two goals they conceded, he was totally out of position. Now he's brilliant, his distribution of the ball is terrific. He made the goal, that's what he does. But he's a fullback.

"My take on it is that fullback's first of all defend and they come in to attack and they help in that particular way. I'd never swap for Robertson for example, who is a really really good defender. He's never caught out defending.

"Klopp obviously encourages Alexander-Arnold to do it. He's going to score or make as many goals as he's at fault for when he's defending...I wouldn't take it.”

Alexander-Arnold is the best right back in the world if you ask his club manager. His international manager is trying him out in midfield.

Kenny Cunningham and Harriet Prior had a lively discussion about the Liverpool right back on OTB AM.
