Alan Quinlan backs young Leinster star to make Ireland transition

As Leinster secured a comfortable opening day win in the Champions Cup, Alan Quinlan considered the international standing of two impressive performers.

Of a Rugby World Cup that offered Irish fans little by way of enjoyment, the performances of Garry Ringrose did at least indicate that one section of Ireland's backline was in safe hands for years to come.

At 24-years of age, the outside centre put in a man-of-the-match performance as Leinster recorded a 33-19 win on Saturday afternoon.

While the exact nature of what Ireland under Andy Farrell will look like is uncertain, Ringrose, one would suspect, is a certainty to start. Nevertheless, Alan Quinlan didn't shy away from the depth of Ireland's talent in this position.

"I still think Chris Farrell has a say," suggested Quinlan when the question of Garry Ringrose's certainty in the starting XV was brought up.

"I'm a massive fan of Ringrose and yes, if we want our attack to be a little different, he's your #1 choice. He's got really good footwork and an ability to find gaps and holes. He's an incredible talent

"Then maybe it is between Bundee Aki, Robbie Henshaw and Farrell about who plays #12."

Of players looking to make their way into the Irish squad as a new regime gets underway, another Leinster player did his chances no harm over the weekend.

"I think Ronan Kelleher is now the starting hooker for Leinster," noted Quinlan, "and I think he has to be in the mix in the next while.

"There is a squad get together before Christmas and I've no doubt he will be there.

"He looks a very accomplished player. He's had his injuries in the last couple of years, but hopefully, he can stay injury-free because he's such a dynamic player.

"Still has a little bit to learn and that will be tested in the coming weeks ... but his impact around the field is really impressive.
