Pat Nevin reveals his extremely harsh initial verdict on Jesse Lingard

As Jesse Lingard continues to light up West Ham's season, Pat Nevin has revealed that he thought the on-loan United attacker was 'rubbish'.

David Moyes is a close friend of his, and Nevin believed that the signing of Lingard might be a move that Moyes might come to regret.

Jesse Lingard

"I have spent years telling everyone how good David Moyes is - he's a really, really fabulous manager. Even through the sticky patches, I stuck with it.

"However, I never felt Lingard could play. I always thought he was a bit rubbish. Just nowhere near that standard - nowhere near Manchester United standard, nowhere near good enough to be an England player. I never thought he was good enough.

"So hands up, [I was] wrong. When you get it wrong, you get it wrong. I don't know why - I feel like I'm making excuses for myself that he is just having a lucky run right now, balls are falling for him and everything is going in.

"That is self-indulgent nonsense. He has been really good, playing really well. He is growing into the player that people thought he would.

"Moyesy must have known it, he had him at United. He must have seen the training ground stuff and why he went for it. I'll be honest, I thought it was the first mistake he'd made in getting him back at West Ham. A really bad mistake.

"I absolutely never spotted it - so absolutely well done, Jesse. I desperately hope for his sake that he stays at West Ham. [He is worth] three times what he was worth before he left Manchester United."
