'It looks quite promising' - Klopp on potential Thiago return

Jurgen Klopp says Thiago could be poised for a return to action in Wednesday's Premier League meeting with Newcastle.

The Liverpool boss told media ahead of the fixture (8pm kick-off) that he is encouraged by the midfielder's progress. He was due to take a full part in training on Monday.

"Thiago did parts of training so far," Klopp said.

"On Friday he trained the full session, but the session was a reduced session, so he could do that. He has to be part of team training, it's not about training one day with the team and then you can play football in the Premier League again.

"It looks quite promising in the moment but I cannot say more about it, to be honest. I don't know."

Coming into their last game of 2020, Liverpool lead the way in the Premier League, but were held to a 1-1 draw by West Brom on Sunday.

Klopp, however, is keen not to overreact to what was a disappointing result at Anfield, after Liverpool dominated much of the encounter.

"I want to win more than anything else but I had to learn so early in my life that it still doesn't happen all the time. And that's completely fine.

"I like winning football games and especially when you deserve winning. For deserving to win tonight, I thought we should have done more – more right things, it's not that we didn't invest, we ran a lot, we fought a lot.

"That's all OK, but to do more of the right stuff. That's what I told the boys already. I'm not angry with them, it just can happen. We will learn off that again and then we will play football again."

Liverpool's lead at the top of the table remains three points, after Leicester City played out a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace on Monday.

Rivals Everton could have joined their neighbours on 32 points, but their game against Manchester City was postponed due to a coronavirus outbreak within the City camp.
