Is David De Gea on his last warning at Manchester United?

As Manchester United progressed to the sixth round of the FA Cup, Andy Mitten joined us to discuss United's progress across this season.

Scott McTominay's alert finish in extra time secured United progress, with Dean Henderson getting a run out in goal for United. It is Henderson's rival for the jersey that continues to draw attention.

The Spaniard was criticised by Gary Neville for not clearing the danger for Everton's last-minute equaliser at the weekend, and Mitten believes that fan confidence in him is low.

David De Gea

"He has made too many mistakes. He was Manchester United's best player during some of very difficult times over the last decade - and Player of the Year several times. That got him that huge contract where he is the best-paid goalkeeper in the world," Mitten said.

"There were always worries about his performances in Spain, so opinions about him in Spain are less flattering than they are among United fans.

"He has been making high-profile mistakes, and when his confidence is hit, it is a long way back for him. The talent is still there, but if he feels that people are doubting and criticising him then he struggles with that.

"I don't think he had any problem with Dean Henderson coming in - and he has done well - but if Henderson is to become United's number one goalkeeper then he is going to need a run of games, not just snatches of matches in domestic cup competitions.

"De Gea's stock has fallen, but United are stuck with him because he earns too much money. No-one can come close to affording him.

"Would you say he is one of the best goalkeepers in the world right now? Not even close."

Mitten believes that while De Gea probably '90%' credit with Manchester United fans 18 months ago, that has markedly fallen.

"It is real to talk about, I can remember Jose Mourinho's credit diminishing with every defeat and every whinge throughout 2018.

"If Dean Henderson started for Manchester United at the weekend, I don't think many Manchester United fans would complain about that because De Gea has been a liability too often."
