"Playing both of them on the same day is a bit unusual" - Daithi Regan on provincial hurling finals

Sunday's a huge day in the hurling calendar as both the Leinster and Munster finals take place.

The Munster final throws-in first at 2pm as Limerick and Tipperary go head-to-head.

Then, Leinster's clash between Kilkenny and Wexford gets going at 4pm.

Offaly legend Daithi Regan joined us to preview the action and began by touching on the running order.

Blue Riband

"It's a bit unusual. A Munster final would have been seen as the blue riband really back the years," he said.

"Playing both of them on the same day is a bit unusual. But the last couple of years have been a bit of a change, obviously with the new system."

But he feels there is a sense of purpose for both these finals, especially from Wexford.

"I think we're going to move up the gears again on Sunday," he said.

"We've spoken about the hurling over the last number of years, about the importance and non-importance of winning provincial titles.

"I think it's back to winner-take-all at the weekend again and I guess you could say from a Leinster point-of-view, Wexford need something tangible after their efforts in the last three years.

"That's understandable why people attribute that they probably do need to win something. I think it would be just deserts for them with the momentum that they've brought forward under Davy.

"He has been extraordinary if you consider a number of years ago where they were in the pecking order. And it doesn't feel that long ago that Kilkenny were being described with the eulogies of arguably being the greatest of all-time. In hurling terms, it's a relatively short time for Wexford to have turned it around, that it'll be more than just competitive.

"The really intriguing thing for me in Munster is the game itself is something to be looked forward to. But I have a feeling for quite a while... that these are the teams that were going to take a lot out of one another over the course over the next 2-3 months."
