WATCH: Shane Lowry visits Dublin pub after winning The Open

Fresh from winning the first major championship of his career, man of the moment Shane Lowry visited a Dublin pub with the Claret Jug to celebrate on Monday afternoon.

Hugh Hourican, the owner of the Boar’s Head on Capel Street in Dublin city centre, said to Dublin Town that Lowry was honouring a promise he made to visit the pub after he won his first major championship.

“We’re delighted to have Shane Lowry here today with the Claret Jug,” Hourican said.

“Myself and Shane go back a long way. Shane is a great ambassador for Ireland, a great sportsman, loves Ireland, loves Dublin and it’s great to have him coming in here today,” he added.

Hourican explained that when Lowry was younger he promised that when he won his first major he would visit the Boar’s Head. Hourican is a long-time family friend of Shane Lowry and the video shows triumphant scenes of Lowry entering the packed pub with his friends and the Claret Jug.

“He made a promise to me, he said, ‘when I win my first major I’ll be Capel street bound,’” according to Hourican.

The Offaly native won The Open in dominant fashion, shooting 15-under-par.

Lowry was six shots clear of his closest challenger, Englishman Tommy Fleetwood, who shot 9-under-par for the weekend.

After shooting a sensational round of 63 on Saturday, one short of equaling Branden Grace's major-championship record of 62, Lowry was four shots clear of Fleetwood.

In tricky conditions on Sunday, Lowry held his nerve and became the fifth Irish winner of The Open in 12 years.

The win comes after Lowry failed to close out the US Open at Oakmont in 2016. Lowry saw his four-shot lead fade away after three consecutive bogies but he had no worries this time around.

In testing conditions, Lowry’s lead was never in danger and he sealed the win with a fist-pump.
