Rory McIlroy | "A Ryder Cup without fans is not a Ryder Cup"

Rory McIlroy has said he would prefer if the Ryder Cup was put back a year if that meant the matches between Europe and the USA could be held in front of fans.

The event is scheduled for Whistling Straits in Wisconsin at the end of September.

US PGA Tour golf is slated to go behind closed doors from June for a month as part of a rescheduled campaign that will see three American majors hosted between August and November if public safety guidelines allow.

Rory McIlroy spoke on an Instagram Live feed with Taylor Made and he doesn't believe the event will work behind closed doors.

"I would much rather they delay it until 2021 than play it at Whistling Straits without fans. And that's from a European going to America, knowing that I'm going to get abuse!

"Obviously it would be better for the Europeans to play without fans because we wouldn't have to deal with some of the stuff that you have to put up with, but at the same time it's not a Ryder Cup.

"It wouldn't be a great spectacle, there'd be no atmosphere, so if it came to whether they had to choose between not playing the Ryder Cup or playing it without fans, I would say just delay it a year and play it in 2021."

The Ryder Cup has been postponed before, after the September 11th attacks in 2001. It was held the following year at the Belfry.

The 2022 Ryder Cup is due to be staged in Italy.
