European Ryder Cup Captain Padraig Harrington joined Golf Weekly where he gave some clues as to his team selection.
In a run-through of who might make the team, Sergio Garcia, the all-time leading points scorer at the Ryder Cup, came up in a hypothetical coin-toss with Shane Lowry.
Both players are outside the current automatic picks. "I reckon if it's Shane or Sergio, Shane gets the nod," said Peter Lawrie.
"Really," replied a surprised Harrington.
"I wouldn't want to say anything, but gee whizz, with Sergio literally, how could you not pick Sergio Garcia when it comes to the Ryder Cup?
"I know I am not declaring any picks but it is the Ryder Cup. Sergio is the best record, the best performer. He's literally made for the Ryder Cup.
"Nobody wants to play against him. He will probably play five times. He would lead a team. Gee, you have put Shane up against a very strong candidate there," Harrington said.
Harrington: Sergio is a Ryder Cup leader
The European Captain seemed excited by what Garcia brings to a Ryder Cup team.
"I pushed very hard last time for the pick and my basic argument is you start Sergio out on Friday morning and he could lead the team and you have five points.
"There is a lot of players who [may not be fully firing], you pick a player a couple of times with Sergio and he wins you five points. He could lead your team and he loves it.
"The matchplay suits him, he plays well tee to green all the time, his putting can be iffy, but in matchplay that is not as big an issue," Harrington said.
