Nate Diaz's triathlon preparations may not have been fully truthful ahead of the McGregor fight

Nate Diaz's preparations ahead of his fight with Conor McGregor were among the big talking points ahead of the fight.

Diaz took the fight on less that two weeks notice after Rafael dos Anjos broke his foot. The Californian's camp claimed the Stockton native was training for a triathlon in the week's before he was called in at short notice fight McGregor.

According to one of his coaches, the camp may not have been fully truthful in the state of Diaz's conditioning. Damian Gonzalez told MMAJunkie that Diaz was enjoying the high-life and not in triathlon training before the call from Dana White came.

"I think that he told Dana that really just to put them at ease, like, ‘Yeah, we’re in shape,’. He can’t tell Dana, ‘I’m sitting here on the beach having a cocktail.’ You just can’t say that."

Diaz trained for the fight in a way he never had before due to the short nature of the lead-in. Gonzalez says that that helped the preparation. "He was going to cram in a lot of work in short time, but he needed to recover from it. Basically what we were doing was shorter workouts, but a lot of workouts throughout the day, doing short duration."

The news of Diaz's preparations casts further doubt on McGregor's buildup to the fight. The Dubliner visibly struggled in the second round before he was submitted.
