Joe Canning airs frustrations over Galway's championship exit

Joe Canning swapped a hurl for a golf club today as the Galway great took part in the Irish Open pro-am.

The 2017 All-Ireland winner was playing alongside Shane Lowry in Lahinch.

After that experience, he joined John Duggan for a chat. He was impacted by injury in the latter part of Galway's failed 2019 Leinster Championship campaign.

But with those out of the way, he has other non-inter-county commitments to look forward to.

"[The body] is good. I've been stitched back together and mended back," he said.

"We have the club now coming up in a couple of weeks' time, so I'm going to try and enjoy that. It's not until the second week in August I think, so it's given me an extra few weeks just to get the body right.

Frustrating

"But it was good a couple of weeks ago when we were playing, so all fine."

Unfortunately for Canning, while he is back fit, Galway are no longer involved in the All-Ireland Championship.

"It is frustrating to be honest. There's no point in saying otherwise," he told John.

"Your goal is, when you get injured, to get back as quickly as possible and try and influence something about the summer.

"But unfortunately I only got 20 minutes myself. But that's the way it goes. It's very unusual - four teams on five points and we were just the unlucky ones.

"That's the way it goes and the cookie crumbles and we just have to prepare again for next year and move on."

He also pointed out that Galway's record over the last 20 Championship games has been strong, with just two defeats.

"It's a good structure I think," Canning added of the round-robin provincial set-up.

"Everybody is happy with the competitiveness of Leinster and Munster and I think Leinster was as good if not better than Munster in some aspects. Because it was a little bit closer between all the teams."

He also tipped reigning champions Limerick to go all the way in 2019.
