Tyrone book spot in All-Ireland semi-finals

Last year's All-Ireland finalists Tyrone have booked their place in this year's semi-finals after a 3 point win over Cork at Croke Park this evening.

Mikey Harte's side knew that after their victory over Roscommon in Dr. Hyde Park last weekend that a win over the Rebels this evening would be enough to send them into the last four.

If Dublin beat Roscommon this evening both sides will progress to the next round and their clash in Omagh in two weeks time will be a dead rubber.

Cork made a blistering start to the tie this evening that was played out in front of a minor crowd at HQ. After just four minutes they lead 1-1 to 0-1 and at half time they had a five-point lead.

Tyrone overcame their slow start though and an early Cathal McShane goal in the second half had them back in the game. A Peter Harte penalty just 10 minutes after the break then sent them into the lead and they never relinquished it.

McShane and Harte both went on scoring sprees, hitting 1-5 each to secure the important victory.

Mickey Harte praised his side afterward; particularly their ability to come from behind and not panic.

"Cork came out of the traps very fast and they were very efficient. A goal in such an early time set us back a lot and then when we thought we were coming to terms with it they cracked a second one so yeah it made life difficult for us but I think it showed a lot of character in the players that they were able to deal with it."

"It was very important that we'd get back into the game and as quickly as possible and to do that we did need goals and we created those chances and we took them and that was brilliant."

"It was great to look up and think 10 minutes into the game we were now back in front from at one stage seven points down so that was very encouraging to our players."

Tyrone will welcome Dublin to Healy Park at 4pm on Sunday 4 August and then the semi-finals take place the following week.
