LISTEN: 'It's a mad criteria to base commitment on' - Wooly on drink bans

Lengthy alcohol bans for GAA teams has been a major topic of discussion this week, and today we got an excellent email in from a listener giving another perspective on the issue.

Tonight, our own Ger Gilroy and Colm 'Wooly' talked about the positives and negatives and whether there is a need for set bans on players drinking from time to time.

"It's a mad criteria to base commitment on," said Wooly, who also shared his experiences of the effects of drinks bans during his inter-county career with Laois, including in Mick O'Dwyer's time in charge.

But he also explained the implications of a restricted social life for young players balancing an inter-county career with everything else life throws at you at that age.

"I always found that it could be a lonely life because if you're from a club that doesn't have too many on the county team - say if you have three or four lads that you're going to county training with, you're on a drink ban, three or four of them could have girlfriends - if you're single, your mates who aren't involved in football are all out, so there's nobody to do anything with at the weekends!"
