Kilkenny minor footballers withdraw from Leinster Championship after 71 point beating

A decision has been made by Kilkenny's county board to withdraw their minor footballers from the Leinster Minor Football Championship.

The decision comes on the back of a 71 point hammering in the first round against Wexford.

After the defeat, county chairman Ned Quinn apologised for the defeat and what the young men had to go through, "As chairman of the county board, I have overall responsibility for all of our county teams so I accept my responsibilities as regards our minor football team as I do with any other team.

"The second thing I would like to say, with the aid of hindsight, is to express very much regret that the young players who represented our county, and were more than willing to represent their county last Saturday, suffered the defeat that they did and I will apologise to them for what happened to them during the game on Saturday."

The twitter reaction to the beating was sympathetic towards the footballers in the county and questions were asked about the possibility of discontinuing the code within the county. The hurling scene is vibrant in Kilkenny but it appears there is much work to do to engage a group committed to making their football sides competitive.
