'I won't be surprised if Brendan Rodgers leaves' | Graham Gartland

It has been a torrid start to the Premier League season for Brendan Rodger’s Leicester City, and it can be argued that the wolves may be at his door.

Leicester City are yet to register a win so far this season and are anchored to the bottom of the table with only one point after 6 games.

After today’s 5-2 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium, Leicester have now gone 5 games in a row without a win, conceding sixteen goals and only scoring 8 goals. On average, they have conceded 2.66 goals a game so far this season.

Their manager Brendan Rodgers has been outspoken about how the club’s owners have not spent enough in the transfer window, leaving the squad lacking depth and quality. This transfer window also saw the departure of key figures such as Kasper Schmeichel and Wesley Fofana, who have left for Nice and Chelsea, respectively.

Speaking to Stephen Doyle on Sunday, former player Graham Gartland discussed the perilous situation Leicester find themselves in and whether the end of Brendan Rodgers's tenure at The Foxes is coming sooner than we think.

‘I think if there is a disconnect between what the owners can give you and what you want as a manager within your team’ said Gartland. ‘I think that will cause disruption at the club.’

‘I wouldn’t be surprised if we see Brendan Rodgers leave over that. I know he had similar arguments at Liverpool about the transfer committee. Eventually, one of the reasons he left Liverpool was because he was calling that out. I think that is one of the reasons why Liverpool lost patience with him.’

‘At Celtic, he had the freedom to sign who he liked. He had total control of the football club, and he was a complete success for them.’

‘I think when he got the job at Leicester, he wanted them to push on and try and go for the Champions League places and to try and break that monopoly of the top four. He wants them to always be in the top six.’

‘Businesses around the world have been affected by loads of things around the world. Some clubs have been able to come through it stronger, and others haven’t. Leicester have been one of those clubs that have struggled.’

Leicester and Rodgers will attempt to dig themselves out of this hole next Saturday when they host Aston Villa at the King Power Stadium.
