GAA Round-Up: Monaghan and Cork prevail in Division 1 and all the other results in the National League

Monaghan and Cork followed Dublin and Donegal's example by registering wins in their first outings of the 2016 National League.

It took an injury time goal from the boot of Conor McManus to secure a win for Monaghan. A short kick-out sent the Roscommon defence into a scramble which McManus capitalised on to intercept the ball and fire it past Roscommon keeper Darren O'Malley.

This put the Ulster men three points in front with substitute Daniel McKenna complimenting the goal with a second point to ensure Roscommon would have no chance of snatching a draw at the death. The wind factor left Roscommon with a six point advantage at half-time after Ciaran Murtagh was fouled for a penalty which he subsequently converted.

Murtagh was later black carded which deprived Roscommon of an important scoring asset and proved to be a decisive moment in the end.

Meanwhile, Cork also had a productive opening day in the League as they thundered home to an emphatic 1-18 to 0-12 victory over Mayo in Pairc Ui Rinn.

Peadar Healy's side established a three point lead inside the first 20 minutes which provided a solid foundation for them to progress to victory over a Mayo side who struggled to impose themselves on the play after a scuppered goal opportunity in the first-half.

More worryingly than the scoreline however, was the enforced substitution of Lee Keegan who suffered a severe head collision with Cork's Eoin Cadogan deep into the second half. Stephen Rochford spoke with Newstalk's Dave McIntyre after the game and said it is hoped that Keegan's condition is not serious.
