Dublin and Donegal dominate the opening night of the National League

Dublin and Donegal were the big winners on the opening night of the National League in games in Croke Park and Newry.

In a repeat of last year's All Ireland Final, Dublin and Kerry met in Croke Park to open their Division 1 campaign with the Dubs winning by six points, 2-14 to 0-14.

The teams were level at half-time drawing seven points a piece, before Dublin pulled away in the second half. Goals from Paddy Andrews and a Diarmuid Connolly penalty ensured Jim Gavin's side opened their league campaign with a win.

Dublin travel to Mayo next week, while Kerry welcome Roscommon to Killarney.

In Newry, Donegal topped Division 1 after an opening night victory over Ulster rivals Down by 3-15 to 0-7. Rory Gallagher's side dominated from start to finish and lead at half time by 0-9 to 0-3.

Three goals in the second half put a shine on Donegal's win as two goals from Ryan McHugh and a goal from Paddy McBrearty guaranteed the win. The two teams could meet again later this summer in the Ulster Championship if they both win their semi-finals.

Next weekend, Donegal welcome Cork to Ballyshannon, while Down travel to Roscommon.

On Sunday afternoon, the first round of Division 1 fixtures is completed as Cork play Mayo in Pairc ui Rinn and Roscommon welcome Monaghan to Dr Hyde Park. Both of those games throw in at 2pm.
