Daly wary of the Dubs 'clapping themselves on the back'

Anthony Daly reckons his former Dublin charges may "have been clapping themselves on the back" a little too much going into their walloping by Cork at Croke Park over the weekend.

The Dubs began with a bang under new boss Ger Cunningham, shooting to the top of the Allianz National Hurling League Division 1A table following victories over both Tipperary and Kilkenny - and getting the post-Daly era off to a flier, but they were humiliated in a 0-34 to 1-20 defeat by the Rebels on Saturday night.

"It was a very poor game," Daly told Joe in the Off The Ball studio yesterday. "Honestly ... it was a no-show really by Dublin. Maybe a little bit of clapping themselves on the back for the first two performances.

"It's been a feature of this league so far. Teams have not performed on given days, and they've taken wallopings obviously."

Listen to Anthony Daly on Sunday's Off The Ball here:

As for how he felt watching his former players in such strife - the Clareman was Dubs boss from 2008 to 2014 - he said: "You'll have to get over that at some stage. It's not my brief now, I'm just watching on."

"They're looking pretty now in the league," he added of Jimmy Barry-Murphy's Cork.

Daly was joined by former Mayo and Armagh footballer Billy Joe Padden in reviewing the afternoon's Gaelic games action, and reckoned Tipp's victory in Ennis yesterday had been a "must-win" for his native Banner.

On the back of JJ Delaney's interview on Off The Ball midweek, the Clarecastle rated the Kilkenny legend as "just behind [former Clare full-back Brian] Lohan!" in the bigger scheme of things, but added: "To walk away the way he could, it's lovely to call it yourself with all those medals in your pocket."

Daly also offered analysis on all the Division 1A sides' current situations.
