'Waterford played a better brand of hurling than Cork'

After racing a 9-point lead, Waterford came very close to pipping Cork yesterday but in the end both sides will have to go at it again in the Munster Championships.

The two sides were involved in an exciting 1-21 to 1-21 draw at Semple Stadium and tonight, Daithi Regan and our own Diarmuid 'Gizzy' Lyng analyzed the game and what it means for both sides before they meet in the replay.

"A lot of us have written Waterford off coming into this Championship, particularly based on their last two performances, but I just thought yesterday that they played a better brand of hurling than Cork for the bulk of the game," said Daithi, alluding to the Deise possession style of play and the frenetic movement.

The former Offaly hurler also sounded a note of optimism for Waterford.

"I think Waterford have guys to come back and those young fellas will flourish from having performed on a day like that. I thought their style was better and more effective for longer periods. And Cork disappointed me."

Daithi believes Cork have not improved since losing last year's All Ireland final. Gizzy also felt Waterford "played more diligently to the system" than Cork did.

Both lads also felt the tackle count, which was in Waterford's favour, spoke volumes.
