Championship preview: Down, Tyrone, take 2!

Ulster SFC preliminary-round replay

6pm, Saturday May 24th, Pairc Esler

Down and Tyrone will meet again this Saturday evening in Pairc Esler after last Saturdays draw in Omagh.

Sean Cavanagh’s injury-time brace of frees rescued a draw for Tyrone in Omagh last Sunday. Having controlled the first half, leading by 1-05 to 0-03, the second half proved to be an entirely different affair. Three substitutions, few positional changes, and a black card to Tyrone goalkeeper Niall Morgan, allowed Down back into the game. They took the lead for the first time with 10 minutes to go, but Donal O’Hare missed a 13 yard-free in the 68th minute to put them  three in front. Cavanagh held his nerve to kick two frees in the closing minutes.

Team News

James McCartan hasn’t named his Down side yet, but he’ll be expected to name a team that took to the field in the second half last sunday rather than the fifteen they begun with.

Mickey Harte has made two changes, bringing Ronan McNabb in at right-half back in place of Tiernan McCann, and Patrick McNiece in at right-half forward ahead of Mark Donnelly. The quarter of Stephen O’Neill, Justin McMahon, Martin Penrose and Conor Gormley, who were introduced late on against Down will be expected to impact the game from the bench once more.

Tyrone: Niall Morgan; Aidan McCrory, Dermot McBride, Barry Tierney; Ronan McNabb, Matthew Donnelly, Peter Harte; Colm Cavanagh, Conor Clarke; Patrick McNeice, Sean Cavanagh, Ciaran McGinley; Darren McCurry, Niall McKenna, Kyle Coney.
