Eamonn Fitzmaurice | Don't write Mayo off

Teams should write Mayo off at their own peril according to former Kerry boss Eamonn Fitzmaurice.

Mayo suffered a shock 0-17 to 2-12 defeat against Roscommon last week in Castlebar. Since then, pundits have asked whether it will be Mayo who will come closest to stopping Dublin's drive-for-five or how much will the county, often seen as the second best in the country, falter.

In OTB AM's own GAA power rankings this week Mayo were relegated down to the fourth-best county in the country behind Tyrone, Kerry and Dublin.

However, Fitzmaurice was on Friday's OTB AM and said that he didn't envision the Roscommon defeat hamstringing Mayo, rather, he said, it could push them on to thrive as underdogs.

"I think the thing with Mayo sometimes is they are at their most dangerous when they are backed into a corner and they have to fight a bit", Fitzmaurice noted.

"I think sometimes when there is expectancy there can be almost an overconfidence about them and then you can catch them."

Fitzmaurice added that the two upsets last week of Cavan beating Monaghan and Roscommon's victory were not as big a surprise as many would think considering the level of competition in Division 1 in which Cavan and Roscommon play. Fitzmaurice said:

"Both Cavan and Roscommon would have learnt a lot [in Division 1], both teams would have lost tight games and y’ know they would have definitely developed a lot playing at that level."

"So, while of course, it was a shock and I don't think it would have been part of James Horan's plan, Mayo were missing a few players and they will regather themselves."

"They have a good break now, I think they have three or four weeks until the next game so I wouldn't be writing them off just yet", Fitzmaurice concluded.
