Schalke 04 part ways with former Huddersfield boss David Wagner

Bundesliga side Schalke 04 have sacked Daniel Wagner as head coach after their poor start to the new league campaign.

Bottom of the standings, Schalke have conceded eleven goals in their opening two matches in the new season and that has been enough for the club to relieve Wagner and his coaching ticket of their duties.

A 3-1 defeat against Werder Bremen on Saturday followed an 8-0 opening day loss to Bayern Munich, meaning they are one of just three clubs to be without points after the opening two rounds of fixtures.

Following a promising stint in charge of Huddersfield Town, during which time he guided the club to the Premier League, Wagner was installed as Schalke boss in 2019 and made a positive initial impression, but their form since the middle of last year has dipped to the point that they have now gone 18 league matches without a win.

"We had all hope that we could improve on the pitch together with David Wagner. Unfortunately, we haven't seen the right performances and results from the first two games of the season for this to happen," Schalke Head of Sport, Jochen Schneider, said on Sunday.

"We have therefore decided to make a fresh start. Despite the disappointing results, this wasn’t an easy decision for us to make. I would like to thank David Wagner, Christoph Bühler and Frank Fröhling, who, up until their departure, have done everything they can to get Schalke back on track."

Both Buhler and Frohling have been placed on gardening leave. It's expected that the German club will name a replacement in the coming days, with Wagner's successor set to be tasked with reviving their form quickly ahead of a meeting with RB Leipzig on Saturday.
