Antonio Conte is limited by Tottenham's lack of quality players - John Giles

Tottenham do not have a squad capable of achieving more than they already are, says John Giles.

John Giles joined The Football Show on Thursday to discuss Antonio Conte and Tottenham.

Tottenham dramatically topped their group in the Champions League.

All four teams in the group could top it during the final round. Tottenham began their game at the top and finished it at the top, but moved around throughout as results changed. As such, there was plenty of stress for manager Antonio Conte.

That's been the tale of Spurs' season so far.

Some weeks, they look like one of the best teams in Europe. They get good results. Harry Kane is prominent and the attack is flowing. But other weeks they carry a constipated attack and Conte's tactics prove to be too cautious. That leads to some frustrating results and missed opportunities.

For some, the inconsistency is a result of Conte's approach. But that's not what John Giles thinks. Giles believes that Conte is a great manager and the problem that Tottenham have is the lack of quality players in their squad.

"That's Conte, I think Conte, with the players he has at Spurs, is getting much more out of them than is actually there," Giles said.

"I know they've got Son upfront and they've got Harry Kane. But if you look at the rest of the team, it's workmanlike. There's no doubt a Conte team will work really hard. That's where they're getting their results from.

"They haven't got brilliant players. There's a few good players, the two players up front are terrific. He hasn't spent a lot of money."

Giles still believes that Antonio Conte and Manchester United missed an opportunity when they didn't come together. United are currently happy with Erik ten Hag, but Giles sees Tottenham's squad as limiting to Conte, whereas United's squad wouldn't have been.

"He would have been made for Manchester United. If he get the same attitude from the Manchester United players that he's getting from Spurs, they'd be a real team. Maybe the new man will get there, but Conte got there with Spurs without spending much money."

Eddie Howe has no shame.
