'He's the best player of the decade' | David Moran on Stephen Cluxton

Stephen Cluxton is 'easily' the best player of the decade, according to Kerry footballer David Moran.

The Dublin captain was announced as the GAA GPA Footballer of the Year at the PWC All-Star Awards and both Mayo’s Colm Boyle and Moran were in full agreement.

“Absolutely. He’s easily the best player of the decade. I mean, you could make arguments for James McCarthy or Lee Keegan.

“He’s so consistent. He plays all the league games, he plays all the championship games at the same standard, he’s really good. I just hope he retires,” Moran said.

While Cluxton has been excellent for the entire decade, Boyle thought he was particularly fantastic in 2019 and that Dublin may not have secured the five-in-a-row without him.

“I thought he deserved it. I know people are saying what he’s done for football that it was time and that he should get it just because of that.

“But just going on this year alone, I just thought he was outstanding. Even in the two finals against Kerry. That kick-out to Brian Howard for Jack McCaffery’s goal just stands out.

“Obviously it’s a great catch by Howard but it’s just pinpoint accuracy from Stephen. Just the saves then, obviously. You have the penalty save. You have the save for Paul Murphy, the save for Stephen O’Brien in the replay.

“If that goes in you just don’t know, it could have been a different game with 15 minutes to go. I think overall, Stephen Cluxton deserved it this year, no doubt about it,” Boyle commented.

Cluxton has not yet announced whether he will retire or if he will stay on for another year like Dublin boss Jim Gavin.

However, now that he has picked up the Footballer of the Year award for the first time, he surely has won it all after a star-studded career with the Dubs.
