The Kick Off: Kilkenny and Tipperary both prepare for their Championship bows

HURLING

All-Ireland hurling champions Kilkenny are back in action this afternoon as Brian Cody's men begin their assault on the Leinster Championship.

Wexford are all that stand between Brian Cody's side and another provincial final.

Kilkenny start with 12 of last year's All-Ireland-winning side with Joey Holden taking the number 3 jersey.

Ger Aylward is in for the injured Richie Power while John Power is replaced by Walter Walsh.

2004 was the last time Wexford managed a win over the Cats but they have held their own at underage level in recent years.

Last year's beaten All-Ireland finalists, Tipperary, also begin their campaign this afternoon when they take on Limerick at the Gaelic Grounds.

It's the third successive season the sides have met in the Munster semi-final, with Limerick coming out on top for the last two years.

That throws-in at 4pm.

Before that, is the intermediate clash between the counties at the same venue - 2pm the start time there.

There's also hurling in Ulster, with Championshi quarter-finals between Derry and Donegal and Armagh and Down.

They both throw-in at 3.30pm.

GAELIC FOOTBALL

In football, Monaghan are bidding to reach a third consecutive Ulster final for the first time since the 1920's.

Fermanagh stand in their way as they face each other in today's semi-final.

Malachy O'Rourke has made one change to the side that beat Cavan in the provincial quarter-finals.

Fermanagh come into this game on the back of victory over Antrim and secured promotion to Division 2 earlier in the year.

That match is underway at Kingspan Breffni Park at 4pm with Cavan and Antrim playing in the minors from 2.15pm.

EUROPEAN GAMES

The inaugural European Games in Baku continue today with a raft of Irish athletes involved in the action.

Katie Taylor fights for a quarter final spot in the Women's lightweight competition.

She's up against Bulgaria's Denitsa Eliseeva at 2.30pm.

In the men's heavyweight last 16, Darren O'Neill squares up to Raitis Sinkevics later this evening.

Also today, Dean Walsh and Michael O'Reilly have last 16 bouts against Russian and Montenegrin opponents respectively.

SOCCER

The European Under-21 Championship continues this evening with Group B under the microscope.

At 5, Sweden take on England before the Italy - Portugal clash which kicks-off at 7.45.

In the Copa America, Brazil take on Venezuala at 10.30pm Irish time.

Before that, Columbia take on Peru in the other Group C clash at 8.

In the women's World Cup, Brazil are also in action - they face Australia at 6 o'clock.

Later, it's France versus South Korea which has a 9pm start time.

HORSE RACING

Today's card is at Gowran Park where the first goes to post at 2.15.
