EUROPEAN GAMES

Brendan Irvine fights for gold today at the inaugural European Games.

The Belfast Light-flyweight will be looking to claim Ireland's first gold medal at the Games when he fights Russia's Bator Sagaluev in this afternoon's final, which is due to get underway at 2.45pm.

In badminton, the Mixed Doubles pairing of Chloe and Sam Magee will be first into action this morning in their final group match.

Also this morning, Scott Evans faces a Bulgarian opponent in the last-16 of the Men's Singles while Sam and Josh Magee will contest the Men's Doubles Quarter-finals during the afternoon session.

Among the rest of the Irish competitors in action today in Baku, the Women's 3x3 Basketball team face the Czech Republic in the quarter-finals.

And there's eight Irish swimmers in action on the third day of action in the pool.

SOCCER

Several players have rubbished claims made in an Argentinian newspaper yesterday that Irish players were paid €10,000 each not to injure Lionel Messi when they met in a friendly at the Aviva Stadium in 2010.

Kevin Kilbane, Keith Fahey, Keith Andrews and Darren O'Dea have all denied the claims while the FAI released statement last night stating there was no truth to the report.

The association say the claims made in La Naicion newspaper are baseless.

HURLING

Wexford will host Kilkenny in the Bord Gais Energy Leinster Under 21 final on July 8th, following wins for both counties last night.

The Cats beat Carlow 2-14 to 2-12 in Netwatch Cullen Park while in Tullamore Wexford beat Offaly 2-16 to 1-12.

GAELIC FOOTBALL

Sligo may contest the decision to host the Connacht final in Dy Hyde park on July 19th.

The venue was confirmed to the surprise of many yesterday but according to the Irish Independent the Yeats County board requested Pearse Stadium.

GOLF

Shane Lowry heads the Irish challenge at the start of this week's BMW International Open in Munich.

After finishing in a tie for 9th place at last week's US Open, Lowry has broken back into the world's top 50 and will be looking to continue his good form in the build-up to next month's Open Championship at St Andrews.

Later this evening, Padraig Harrington is back in action on the PGA Tour when he tees-off at the Travelers Championship.

HORSE RACING

There's racing today at Leopardstown.

The first of a seven-race card goes to post at 7.50pm.
