The Final Whistle: Munster hurling final venue revealed

GAA

Semple Stadium will stage this year's Munster Senior hurling final.

Tipperary and Waterford will meet in this year's decider on Sunday, July 12th.

The Thurles ground was selected at tonight's meeting of the Munster Competitions Control Committee.

Earlier, Clare's All Ireland prospects were handed a major boost after confirmation that midfielder Colm Galvin has returned to the panel after a two-month spell in Boston.

Manager Davy Fitzgerald says he fully expects the All Star midfielder to be able to play a part in next month's Round 1 qualifier against Offaly.

UFC

Conor McGregor's hugely anticipated UFC title fight has been thrown into doubt.

Reigning featherweight champion Jose Aldo has reportedly suffered a fractured rib in training today, which makes him a doubt for the July 11th showdown at UFC 189 in Las Vegas.

McGregor's opponent was taken to hospital after suffering the injury and X-rays have confirmed a rib fracture, which typically requires about three weeks to heal.

SOCCER

Sligo Rovers have parted company with manager Owen Heary.

It has been confirmed that Heary was sacked by the club two weeks ago amid reports that senior player Joseph N'Do had been taking charge of training.

League of Ireland pundit, Stuart Byrne told Off The Ball that both parties have spent the past fortnight trying to hammer out some sort of agreement.

EUROPEAN GAMES

It's been another mixed day for Ireland's boxers at the European Games.

Three fighters were in action today in the quarter-finals, but only one of them managed to progress to secure a medal.

Belfast's Sean McComb won his lightweight quarter-final to guarantee that he will return home from Baku with at least a bronze medal.

But there was disappointment for welterweight Adam Nolan and light-welterweight Dean Walsh, who both lost their quarter-finals.

In badminton, Scott Evans recovered from losing the opening game of his match to claim his second win in the group stages of the Mens Singles.

The 27-year-old Dubliner remains top of Group A going into the final round of pool matches.
