The Final Whistle: City win and Richie Hogan 'hates' current Championship structure

SOCCER

Manchester City have started their Premier League campaign with a resounding win.

The 2014 champions defeated their hosts West Brom 3-0 in tonight's clash at the Hawthorns.

Two goals in the first-half, which were credited to Yaya Toure, as well as a powerful second-half header from Vincent Kompany helped City to a deserved victory that has seen them go top of the table.

The first of Toure's long-range strikes could still be awarded to his team-mate David Silva, who got a slight flick onto the midfielder's shot.

Irish international James McClean started for West Brom, but his debut for the club lasted just 45 minutes before he was replaced at half-time.

GAA

Kilkenny hurler Richie Hogan says that the GAA should consider restructuring the All-Ireland Championship.

The Cats booked their place in this year's All-Ireland final with a comfortable win over Waterford on Sunday, but Hogan says that the championship format needs to be altered to give players more matches and to cut down on the lengthy gaps between fixtures.

Mick O'Dowd is set to continue in charge of the Meath footballers.

The Skryne clubman has been handed a fourth season in charge of the Royals, despite their disappointing championship defeats to Westmeath and Tyrone.

Martin Ennis has also been returned as senior hurling manager for 2016.

GOLF

Ahead of this week's US PGA, Rory McIlroy has revealed that he had wanted to play at last weekend's WGC Bridgestone Invitational.

The World No 1 says that he was prevented from taking part in the tournament in Ohio by his fitness trainer, who wanted him to take another week to help with the recuperation of his recent ankle injury.
