Shane Lowry falters at St Andrews

Offaly's Shane Lowry has had a poor start to his quest in winning The Open Championship. The Clara native finished +1 for his first round, where scoring conditions were easier than expected at the Old Course.

After bogeys on two of his first four hole, Lowry birdied five of the next ten hole to reach -3. He faltered badly on the Road Hole and quadruple bogeyed it to fall back to -1.

It was an excellent day for amateur Paul Dunne. The Greystones native briefly led the tournament after getting birdies on three of his first five holes. He reached -4 before his only bogey on 11 was followed by seven straight pars to finish.

Graeme McDowell and former champion Darren Clarke are still out on course and are level par. Two time winner Padraig Harringron is in the early holes of his round and is also on level par.
