22-team NBA season to resume in Florida next month

The NBA's Board of Governors have backed plans by a large majority for their season to get back underway next month.

Portland were reportedly the only franchise not to vote in favour of proposals which pave the way for 22 teams to complete the regular season at Disney World in Florida.

Teams will travel to Florida on the 7th of July ahead of the first of eight rounds of games taking place from the 31st of the month to determine the playoff standings.

ESPN report that October 12th is the planned date for game seven of the finals, with the 2021 season set to commence a month later.

“The Board’s approval of the restart format is a necessary step toward resuming the NBA season,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said following the decision.

“While the COVID-19 pandemic presents formidable challenges, we are hopeful of finishing the season in a safe and responsible manner based on strict protocols now being finalized with public health officials and medical experts.

"We also recognise that as we prepare to resume play, our society is reeling from recent tragedies of racial violence and injustice, and we will continue to work closely with our teams and players to use our collective resources and influence to address these issues in very real and concrete ways."

The NBA Players Association are expected to give their backing to the plans tomorrow.
